Peanuts, cats and dogs
Apr. 7th, 2009 10:42 pmThis is why I like the CDCs "Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report" (MMWR) - all sorts of fun information.
As of yesterday, there are *3892* products being recalled because of possible contamination with Salmonella. They all use peanut derivatives from peanuts produced in a plant in Georgia. There hasn't been enough funding to have adequate numbers of state and federal inspectors in the field for years, so there is no reason to assume the conditions in that plant (which passed inspection not long before the outbreak) are unusual.

Evidently no one has looked at whether cats and dogs are associated with significant injuries in the home. Some exerpts:
"Based on 7,456 cases recorded in NEISS-AIP, an estimated average of 86,629 fall injuries associated with cats and dogs occurred in the United States each year during 2001--2006, for an average annual injury rate of 29.7 per 100,000 population."
"Nearly 7.5 times as many injuries involved dogs (76,223 [88.0%]) compared with cats (10,130 [11.7%])"
Because cats know enough to get out of the way? Older people don't have the most injuries, but they do have the most fractures.
"The highest fracture rates occurred among persons aged 75--84 years and >85 years. Among hospitalized patients, 79.9% were admitted for fractures."
Trouble with walking the dog..."Twenty-six percent of falls involving dogs occurred while persons were walking them, and the most frequent circumstances were falling or tripping over a dog (31.3%) and being pushed or pulled by a dog (21.2%)."
Trouble with cats..."Approximately 11.7% of injuries occurred while persons were chasing cats. However, an activity was not specified in 62.1% of cases."
Because no one wants to admit they fell off the ladder while re-hanging a picture to the cat's specifications.

Date: 2009-04-08 09:29 am (UTC)OK I really did LOL at that!
Peter fell over the other day trying to avoid treading on the cat, so I can fully believe these figures. (He was fine and I don't think Fluffy even noticed...)
I have some of your Vanilla Musk burning as I type, so you've been in my thoughts this morning.

I've nearly tripped over various cats tripping down the stairs untold numbers of times. I keep trying to explain to them that if they make me break my neck, I'll be unable to feed them, but they seem remarkably unconcerned.
