Dec. 13th, 2004 10:25 pmI like the solstices and the equinoxes, even if I'm not sure how to spell them, and was wondering if anyone does something special on the winter solstice. I thought I might do something a little more organized than my usual, which is to think, every once and a while, "Wow! We're turning around!"

Following a discussion elsewhere on my flist last week about the value placed on gift giving versus the financial cost and homemade gifts versus bought etc we have decided to radically change our gift giving from next year onwards. We are going to cease giving individual birthday and Xmas presents to kids and the few grown ups we give to. Instead we are going to give one combined gift per household - and this will be an environmentally friendly gift. The Woodland Trust in UK will dedicate trees to people and WWF lets you sponsor endangered species, so we are going give this kind of thing instead. Even if the kids don't appreciate them we feel our money is being spent on something useful.
I felt that this combined present should be given at some neutral time of year (not near someone's birthday etc) and have chosen summer solstice as as good a time as any. So I will be sending letters out to folks in the New Year explaining our policy. No doubt we will be thought strange by some, but we like strange!
