May. 26th, 2012 11:05 amYesterday I was walking into the Gilded Otter, a restaurant and bar named for one of the Dutch ships that brought settlers to New Paltz, and I overheard a woman explaining the name to a group of kids she was with. "On the west coast," she said, "otters don't have gills. Here on the east coast, they do." I considered staging a professional intervention, but, really, where would I begin? My son, when we came here 8 years ago, also had trouble with the name, which he thought was "Grilled Otter".

Date: 2012-05-26 03:46 pm (UTC)(dress whites, we had just had a change of command) and I had no time to change before I rushed out to the airport.
A lady and her little girl were seated across from me in the lounge.
The little girl asked her mother if I was a nurse (I guess because I was in white) and her mother replied, "No dear she is a police officer"
