Jul. 19th, 2012 01:27 pmOne of the two papers I submitted got rejected. One of the reviewers said my tables were too complex - so why not ask me to simplify them? The other reviewer didn't like the fact that the paper was a metanalysis: looking at the data in 21 studies and seeing if they suggest anything as a whole. If the editor had given me a chance to reply, I could have made an argument about the usefullness of the data - in hindsight, one I should have made more strongly in the original MS. Bah.

Date: 2012-07-19 11:08 pm (UTC)I hate it when someone kicks it back no comment so you know
where you came short OR they deny something totally.
I remember when I first reported aboard an admiral's staff.
I was to run his weekly brief and be his writer.
He had a personal aide.
He received a ton of correspondence from COs of the communication stations world wide.
I was given one of the letters, I still remember it was from
the CO of the comm station at Diego Garcia.
I had no idea what the admiral's style was like, ie was it formal or was it casual??? I asked his aide to see his correspondence file
He told me he would not show it to me.
So, I sat down COLD and wrote a reply using typical Navy straight forward jargon
Later I heard through scuttlebutt that the admiral was (((((((NOT))))))) pleased and the letter had been reassigned.
I was so burned up that I went to see the Deputy Director and asked him if it was true that the admiral had NOT been happy with my writing.
(I had originated a ton of correspondence, and had replied to pieces of correspondence also when I was administrative officer for a squadron, so had some idea about proper format etc., but had never seen THIS officer's file.)
The deputy was curt and stated that the admiral had not liked my style
I asked him how I would know what style he liked given fact I had not been given the opportunity of studying it to see what he liked.
He asked me why
I told him the admiral's aide had denied me the opportunity
He summoned the aide who admitted he had not allowed it.
The deputy was ticked off and demanded to know how in the hell I could take care of the admiral's correspondence if I had no idea about his style. Of course it was all a control ploy by this aide
so he had no response. He was dismissed immediately.
The air had been cleared but it still burned me up that NOBODY had had the courtesy of letting me know there was a problem.
I was indebted to the officer who told me what had happened. I just assumed all was fine till then.

My primary duties were MIC officer and writer for Admiral Nagler
and I was denied the chance.
That aide was something else
I later told him to do his job and stop meddling in mine
