I have an email address for the real life me - which I share with my husband (not that he ever accesses it and when he goes away has to be reminded how he finds access to it on the internet).
Then I have an email address as mrs_sean_bean. I set this up when I started LJ as I was advised to separate my online self completely from my real life me in case of cyber stalking etc.
Hello! I just popped in randomly to say I hope you don't mind, but I just have added you to my friends list. I have seen your name a lot, and was just at mrs_sean_bean's LJ, and she was talking of you with fondness, and I thought I would like to read your LJ first hand!
**spurts coffee** That's the problem. And if I was to have a persona for each I would be dead in a week.
So the possibility of what's here leaking into real life doesn't bother you? You could argue that it is pointless to try to prevent, and that the likelihood of your stuff being sought out and used to your detriment is small. There is the cyber-stalking as msb mentioned, again probably very rare but still worth avoiding.
I use the same thing whenever I sign up for an e-mail address or a site. "northtrot87" It makes my life and everyone elses' easier. Although, my stupid university makes us use one with our name @ student.blablabalabl etc.
Thanks =) That's true too. I don't use anything with my last name, which is why school e-mail addresses are really annoying. I never know what kind of people are out there. It's better to be safe than sorry.
Well, let's see. I have half a dozen names I go by and at least four separate emails. I used Rauny for ages, but then I had to change. I need to get away from most people who knew me that way. I needed to free myself from my ex as well, who knew me that way. So I adopted a new persona, another character from my games. Almost all my secondary names are game characters. Each had their own persona, each a different part of me brought to the forefront. In a way, going back to Rauny would be like using my real name online...it was so very much the normal everyday me.
I believe in anonymity and I believe in caution. There's too much online that can go bad fast that it just warrants a little extra caution - not putting your name, address, numbers, etc out where anyone could get them. Hell, one of my best and longest online friends didn't know my real name for years. It's to the point that my real name truly does hold more power for me in some ways. It means more.
And, well, my dad has this tendency to abuse the hell out of technology, so my rauny acct gets tons of spam now.
Well, I don't think that I do or say anythign here that I wouldn't admit to, to be honest. So no, I don't think it would do any real damage if a connection was made. And an lj friend whom I've never met irl is coming to stay for Xmas so what the heck!!
