Mar. 27th, 2006 08:56 pmI am planning to join Mrs. MSB in posting about gardening, maybe as the "Rotting Garden Logs". As a first entry I have been looking for signs of spring I could post. No luck whatsoever until Sunday when I heard what I am assuming are northern spring peepers (Pseudacris crucifer). They are about an inch long, ridiculously cute, and, like a surprising number of animals, don't mind getting partially frozen. Scroll down and you can click on a recording........

The U.S. Geological Survey site is, IMHO, an excellent use of your tax dollars. Lots of interesting stuff.

....there are only three species of frogs or toads native to the UK, several more introduced and no spring peepers. It is very interesting that you only have three native species - I wonder why? Maybe that is typical of islands - I know very little about vertebrates in general.
I'm looking forward to your posts! The only thing I could find going on in my yard last week was the chipmunks have re-opened their hole in the walkway. No matter how much stone I put down there, they throw it out. It is only a few inches wide, so eventually I decided it was too small to worry about, declared victory, and quit. They drive Bailey nuts - he's not allowed to dig there and I swear they pop up and sneer at him before running back in.
