Jun. 13th, 2006 05:52 pmI have a few job leads!
It suddenly occurred to me that maybe I could do science tutoring. I put an ad in the paper and posted on the scientist community about possible rates. I was very encouraged by what they said - looks like I can charge twice what I am making now per hour. I didn't get any respose from the ad, but just knowing it is possible perked me up.
There are four people I've been working with closely on my project who I really like. Two work for the county, one for the state and the other for an engineering firm. While I was dragging myself to that meeting on Monday, I decided to make good use of it by letting them know I was seriously looking for work. I did, then asked the engineer if he minded me coming up to his office to do some stuff we could do over email because I wanted to spend a few hours in a pleasent environment. He agreed and I stayed there as long as possible. Finally we ran out of things to do and I had to go back.
When I got back to my desk in Hostile Environment, Inc. I had an email from one of the county people. She had talked to someone, who talked to someone in the Health Department, who found out there was a biostatistician job open. The hiring people already had a note in their email to expect a resume from me, and a recommendation. Today she forwarded my resume, and this afternoon when I was out they called about an interview.
So now I am really encouraged, and decided to apply for some summer adjunct positions. They are at a SUNY school about 50 miles away. It hadn't occured to me before to apply for them, but when I stacked up what I am getting at my current job I realized I could probably do much better there.
I hadn't thought of any of this until that bitch told me to kiss her ass. Amazing how different things can look just by looking at them differently.
**nods sagely**
