Jul. 10th, 2006 10:34 pmGood evening! I am listening to "The Kraken" from POTC Dead Man's Chest and .... whew!! Crazy intense like the beast itself!! Brought to me by the lovely and generous bloody_adorable, who has not joined bean_uncensored and posted her story yet, but I know she will.
We have replaced the missing camera, and so I can update my garden journal to show you my blooming Forget Me Nots! And blooming Snapdragon Who Laughed At the Snow!!
I am finishing up various crafty projects: something that might be a wind chime, a few flower wreaths, a rug braided from all those old worn out towels we seem to have, and some knitting.
I have survived my first day unemployed without being too glum. Regular readers will be surprised.
From the NYTimes Sunday Style Section, a story of extreme connectedness:

And finally, another fun example of the power of herbs to do all kinds of things other than what people think they are doing: a study that links increased breast mass in boys to exposure to lavender and tea tree oil.
"Over-the-Counter Products Associated with Young Male Breast Enlargement
University of Colorado School of Medicine Pediatrician Dr. Clifford Bloch noticed that three of his young male patients were developing enlarged breasts - a condition termed gynecomastia. As it turned out, each boy was using skin and hair products containing lavender and/or tea tree oil. Dr. Bloch, along with two researchers from the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences, Dr. Derek Henley and Dr. Kenneth Korach, decided to investigate the linkage between the essential oils and breast development. In the laboratory, Bloch, Henley and Korach used human breast cancer cells to test the properties of the essential oils.
The researchers found that the oils mimicked estrogen in the cells and at the same time appeared to have a weak effect in suppressing male hormone responsiveness. "Taken together, these data provide evidence that lavender oil and tea tree oil may disrupt the balance of hormonal effects in specific tissues," said Henley. "These findings may explain cases of young males with enlarged breasts who are using these products."
Henley, D.V., C.A. Bloch, and K.S. Korach. 2006. Components of health care products associated with male prepubertal gynecomastia possess estrogenic and antiandrogenic activities. Endocrine Society meeting. June 24-27. Boston.
