Mwhahahahahahaha!
Aug. 8th, 2012 02:32 pmI was in the yard checking out a spider working on a big fly in her web. It seemed like her only catch until something small flew in and she raced off to check it out. It looked like she ate it then and there, a snack size fly. Then another one landed, and I put together the fact that I was standing close, with annoying little gnats buzzing around my head, with her sudden good luck. So I made little air currents to waft the gnats closer and soon she was running all over the place - snacking on some, wrapping others. When I decided to get back to work, she had seven wrapped up close to the big fly. Revenge is sticky sweet!
Sick Puppies: You're Going Down
Aug. 5th, 2012 01:32 pmI love this bass line and the song, but the video was also a fun surprise.

Jul. 19th, 2012 01:27 pmOne of the two papers I submitted got rejected. One of the reviewers said my tables were too complex - so why not ask me to simplify them? The other reviewer didn't like the fact that the paper was a metanalysis: looking at the data in 21 studies and seeing if they suggest anything as a whole. If the editor had given me a chance to reply, I could have made an argument about the usefullness of the data - in hindsight, one I should have made more strongly in the original MS. Bah.
Some illustrations I ran into while searching for chimp articles. I think it is true that some primates will throw feces at someone they are unhappy with. I didn't know they have such a range of other ways to let someone know they don't like them. I'd say our behavorial repetoire is lacking in comparison.

I'd like to think that if I ever got a hold of Daniel Craig, in that shallow, PWP sort of way I often think of, that I would share him with you. But maybe not - it is possible that I am just that selfish. This line of thought is brought to you by ionic bonds, which take or give electrons, but never share them:

States visited
Jun. 11th, 2012 09:50 pmDidn't realize I'd visited this many - thanks to the USNavy, moving from one coast to another, and various road trips, like hitch-hiking from Chicago to New Orleans for Mardi Gras when I was a freshman.

May. 26th, 2012 11:05 amYesterday I was walking into the Gilded Otter, a restaurant and bar named for one of the Dutch ships that brought settlers to New Paltz, and I overheard a woman explaining the name to a group of kids she was with. "On the west coast," she said, "otters don't have gills. Here on the east coast, they do." I considered staging a professional intervention, but, really, where would I begin? My son, when we came here 8 years ago, also had trouble with the name, which he thought was "Grilled Otter".
Bailey update
May. 18th, 2012 09:06 pmHe came home yesterday for the night, then back to the vets today, home again now and another day at the vets tomorrow. His sugar levels are down from ridiculous to just high, so now they can do a glucose tolerance curve which (I think) will tell them how much insulin to give him. He's been on pretty constant IV insulin since Monday night and it wasn't until last night that his sugar levels weren't scary. Two shots a day for life, and the only food he can have is a special brand for diabetic dogs. He is fast asleep on the couch - way too much excitement over the last few days for an old dog!
Skipping a meeting...
May. 15th, 2012 09:29 am...and feeling guilty, but not guilty enough to drive an hour to work and back for a meeting I am technically not required to attend. Its the college-wide faculty meeting. Too much blatant display of my complete lack of interest in administration won't be good for my tenure bid, but....I just couldn't talk myself into it. Next year will be my second full year on my tenure run and I'll have to sign up for some committee work. I play well with others and am happy to lead or follow in these situations, whatever is required, but, all in all, I'd rather be reading.
Bailey is still at the vets, but they say he did well during the night and is looking better. They kept him overnight to hydrate him and see if they can get him to eat. We've just discovered he is diabetic, and, in fact, was in a very bad state I brought him in - unable to keep food down and refusing water for more than a day. When I pick him up I will learn how to do insulin shots for him. I'm worried about him.
